What Is Dis-Ease?

Understanding the Challenges of Life

Life is full of challenges, and sometimes these challenges can make our lives harder. Dis-ease, in its broadest sense, refers to anything that disrupts our well-being and hinders our ability to live a fulfilling life. It encompasses various aspects, including physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Let's explore the concept of dis-ease and how it affects us.

1. Emotional Stress and Illness

Emotional stress plays a significant role in the development of various illnesses. Studies have shown that it is a major contributing factor to the six leading causes of death in the United States, including cancer, coronary heart disease, and accidental injuries.  The impact of emotional stress on our health cannot be underestimated, highlighting the importance of managing stress and finding healthy coping mechanisms.

2. Disease, Illness, and Health

Defining health and illness can be complex. Dis-ease, derived from old French and Latin, literally means the absence of ease or elbow room. It represents an impediment to free movement and can manifest in various ways. Disease, on the other hand, refers to a specific instance of something causing dis-ease and hindering freedom of movement. Health, as a metaphor, is more complex and derives from an old Germanic root meaning wholeness. It encompasses physical, mental, and social well-being.

3. Addiction as a Disease

Addiction is a prime example of dis-ease. It is a chronic condition that affects the brain and leads to compulsive behaviors despite negative consequences. Addiction can cause severe physical and mental health issues and can be life-threatening if left untreated. It is crucial to recognize addiction as a disease rather than a lack of willpower, as it involves changes in the brain that drive addictive behaviors. Seeking appropriate treatment and support is essential for individuals struggling with addiction.

4. Coping with Life-Threatening Illnesses

A life-threatening illness can significantly impact our well-being and make our lives harder. Coping with such illnesses requires resilience and finding ways to maintain meaning and joy in life. While certain activities may no longer be possible, exploring new hobbies, taking classes, or joining clubs can help nourish the spirit and expand social networks. It is important to adapt and find alternative sources of fulfillment during challenging times.

5. Disabilities and Challenges

Disabilities can also contribute to the experience of dis-ease. A disability refers to any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for a person to engage in certain activities and interact with the world around them. Improving conditions in communities by providing accommodations and support can help individuals with disabilities participate fully in everyday life.

In conclusion, dis-ease encompasses various challenges that can make our lives harder. It includes emotional stress, illnesses, addiction, coping with life-threatening illnesses, and disabilities. Recognizing and addressing these challenges is crucial for maintaining well-being and finding ways to live a fulfilling life despite the obstacles we may face.

What is the cure for Dis-Ease?

Until we one day meet Jesus face-to-face, He uses those “dis-eases” -  to make us more like Him.

C.S. Lewis called pain, “Gods megaphone.”

Gods uses pain to get our attention. He doesn’t silence pain, He uses it.

Consider every single character in the Bible. Just one example is Paul. We could never say that God cured his dis-ease. 95% of his life was constant dis-ease. Yet God wrote over half the New Testament through him.

Paul begged God to take away the struggle. Paul called it “the thorn in my side.” God never removed it. Yet Paul chose to trust God in spite of his circumstances.

Paul and every earth dweller since sin entered the world experiences frequent dis-ease. Pain does not go away just because we love God. Instead, if we let it, it will cause us to love Him more deeply.

The gift - God promises that “My grace is sufficient.” That He will “work all things for the good of those that love Him and are called according to His purpose.”

The journey - God’s purpose is to make us more like Jesus. To accomplish this, He will use all means possible.

Suffering is no fun, but He will often use it to speak to our soul. This potential short term pain will often bring very long term gain.

He will use dis-ease to speak when other methods might have gone unnoticed. God loves us too much to let us remain on our path of destruction. That path eventually leads to death.

Yes, God might use pain to bring us to Him. He might use pain to bring us to joy. He might use dis-ease to bring us to Life; because He loves us.

He promises His presence. He promises, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” That presence IS the cure for our dis-ease. That peace IS the cure for our dis-ease.

He’s not the bridge over the pain, He’s the peace that passes all understanding through the pain.

God’s personal presence and peace in our heart is only possible through the residence of Gods Holy Spirit. We can freely receive this residence because of what Jesus freely did for us by dying on the cross. It is only by His wounds that we are truly healed. And only by His presence can we truly experience life at its fullest expression!
